SDG 5: Gender Equality

United International University (UIU) is deeply committed to advancing gender equality. This commitment is reflected in targeted policies, student support measures, and the systematic monitoring of women’s participation across academic and administrative spheres.

Policy and Actions

  1. UIU has made significant progress in expanding access for women in higher education:
    • Enrollment of Women: In 2024, a total of 3,283 female students were enrolled in
      undergraduate programs.
    • First-Generation Women: A survey revealed that 36.64% of female students are first-generation university attendees, underscoring the university’s role in breaking intergenerational barriers.
  2. The university systematically measures and tracks:
    • The gender gap in academic outcomes, and implements corrective programs where disparities exist. Data is analyzed annually and reported to university leadership to guide future planning (Women’s application, acceptance, enrollment, retention, and graduation rates).
    • Calculation method of Women’s Application Rate: (Number of female applicants ÷ Total applicants)
    • Calculation method of Women’s Entry Rate (Enrollment): (Number of female students enrolled ÷ Total accepted students)
  3. The university maintains an Equal Access and Participation Policy ensuring:
    • Non-discriminatory admission and recruitment practices.
    • Gender-sensitive academic and administrative systems.
    • Active encouragement of women’s participation in all academic and extracurricular areas.
  4. The university provides dedicated support schemes for women, including:
    • Mentorship programs led by experienced faculty and alumni (with at least 10% participation from female students).
    • Scholarships, tuition waivers, and fellowships to enhance women’s access to higher education.
    • Capacity-building workshops, leadership training, and counseling services focused on women’s empowerment and career development.
  5. The university actively encourages women to apply for and enroll in STEM and other underrepresented disciplines through targeted outreach and awareness programs.
  6. The university upholds a zero-tolerance policy toward discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity. All reports of discrimination are investigated confidentially and fairly
  7. To support a family-friendly academic environment, the university provides maternity leave and flexible academic arrangements for female staff and students.
  8. The university is planning to establish and/or partner with safe and affordable on-campus or nearby accessible childcare facilities.
  9. The university ensures that any person reporting discrimination, harassment, or misconduct:
    • Is protected from retaliation or disadvantage in academic or employment contexts.
    • Has access to confidential reporting channels and fair, transparent investigations.
    • Receives necessary support through counseling or legal guidance if required.
