New solar cooking system
As the cost of living continues to rise with power and fuel price hikes, low-income families across the country are struggling to make ends meet. Amid this situation, a low-cost cooking solution has brought much-needed relief for Suraiya Akter, a housewife living in the Basilla area of Mohammadpur, Dhaka.
Suraiya has been able to significantly reduce her family's cooking fuel costs, making it easier to manage expenses.
She now can cook food for her six-member family at a monthly cost of only Tk500-Tk600 while the cost of a meter-less double burner gas stove is Tk1,080 per month.
Previously, the family would need around four maunds (equivalent to around 40 kg) of firewood every month for cooking, which costs around Tk1,500.
"This solar system can be used even in low sunlight as it also has a connection with the grid. Five more such systems are under operation at commercial and household levels in the country," said Prof. Dr. M Rezwan Khan, the innovator and designer of the facility.
Prof. Dr. Md. Abul Kashem Mia, vice-chancellor of UIU, said his university is dedicated to supporting researchers and encouraging innovation and will provide the necessary resources to facilitate research projects and promote a culture of innovation.

Cheap offshore wind power
Soon cheaper electricity may be powering your home if a new effort to harness offshore wind power is successful.
The government is exploring the potential of wind power as an alternative source of energy, given the low potential of hydropower and the land scarcity challenges faced by solar power.
Prof. Dr. Md Shahriar Ahmed Chowdhury, the deputy team leader of the international joint venture consultancy team, told that their team will assess the potential for wind power in offshore areas of Bangladesh located in the Bay of Bengal. He added that they will identify two suitable locations for developing offshore wind farms.
